5 Things To Consider When Waxing a Male Client

It’s increasingly common for men to go beyond the chin in terms of hair removal. Many modern men are also opting to shave or wax hair in areas other than the head and face. This shift means that every professional waxer should prepare to wax men at their salon. Your first time waxing a male client can be nerve-racking—and if this is your client’s first appointment, it’s nerve-racking for them, too! Check out these five things to consider when waxing a male client to help both you and your client feel calm and assured throughout the waxing process.

Preventing Pain

Waxing can be painful. If this is your client’s first time getting a wax, make sure to prepare them for what’s to come! They can prevent or minimize pain by:

  • Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and smoking that day
  • Taking an over-the-counter painkiller 30 min. prior to their appointment
  • Breathing deeply and not tensing up during the wax

Preventing Ingrown Hairs

Did you know men are more prone to experiencing ingrown hairs than women? Their hair is generally thicker, which is especially the case for men with coarse and curly hair. To prevent hairs from regrowing incorrectly, clean and exfoliate your client’s skin prior to waxing.

Be Ready for a Longer Treatment

Another thing to consider when waxing a male client is the treatment time. Because men tend to have thicker and more plentiful hair than women, waxing them can take notably longer. Make sure to prepare yourself—and your client—for a lengthy appointment!

Heavy Fragrances: Yay or Nay?

Many waxes come with heavy fragrances like rose and cherry blossom. While some men may love these scents, others may not! We recommend investing in unscented or less heavily scented waxes to appeal to a wider range of clients.

Provide Aftercare Tips

After a wax, your client will need to take care not to irritate their skin. They should wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid sweat-inducing activities like exercising and taking hot baths for 24-48 hours post-wax. They should also avoid using body products like lotions or deodorants.
