Perfecting Your Lash Lifts: A Guide to Troubleshooting with Elleebana Systems

When a Lash Lift Doesn’t Go as Planned

A lash lift is a chemical service that relies on balance and accuracy. Every variable - wrap tension, lotion placement, processing time, and even room temperature - influences the final result.

Technique

Technique is usually the first place to look when troubleshooting a lift. Even small inconsistencies can make a big difference in how the final result turns out.

Preparation and Cleansing

Were the lashes fully cleansed? If lashes weren’t fully cleansed, natural oils or residual skincare can block the lifting lotion from properly breaking down the disulfide bonds. Always use a gentle, oil-free cleanser, followed by a rinse with saline or water. Lashes should feel completely clean, matte, and residue-free before applying any adhesive or balm.

Rod or Shield Selection

Choosing the correct rod or shield size determines how lifted the lashes will appear.

  • Too large: You’ll see a subtle bend or a “flat” lift.

  • Too small: Lashes may over-curl, fold back, or appear crimped.

When in doubt, hold the rod or shield against the lashes before application — the tips should reach about halfway up the curve of the rod for the most balanced lift. As you pull the lashes up, they should sit about three-quarters of the way up the surface.

If the lashes extend past that point or begin to wrap over the top, the rod or shield is too small — size up. If your client’s lashes are too long even for the largest size, simply ensure that you don’t apply lotion over the hump or apex of the rod or shield. This prevents over-curling and keeps the lash line smooth and natural.

Proper sizing and placement are key to achieving a clean, even curl that enhances the lash line without distortion.

Rod or Shield Placement

Was the rod or shield positioned correctly along the lash line?

The rod or shield should sit snugly along the lash line with no visible gaps. If it’s placed too high, some lashes may not contact the lifting lotion and result in an under-lift. If it’s too low, the lotion can reach the skin or lash line and cause irritation or uneven processing.

⚠️ Caution: Avoid flipping the lid. This happens when the rod or shield is pressed too tightly or pulled too far upward, causing the eyelid to fold or lift off the natural contour. Not only is this uncomfortable for the client, but it can also distort lash direction and lead to inconsistent results. Always apply gentle pressure to mold the shield securely in place without altering the natural shape of the lid.

Lash Wrap

Your lash wrap can reveal a lot. Lashes should be brushed straight, evenly spaced, and isolated with no crisscrossing.

  • Crossed lashes may result in kinks or uneven curl.

  • Uneven tension can lead to inconsistent lift patterns.
If you notice lashes popping off or sticking unevenly, check your adhesive or balm application.

Adhesive or Balm Usage

Using too much adhesive can create a barrier that prevents the lotion from reaching the lash properly. Too little, and lashes may detach from the rod. You want a thin, smooth coat that allows for flexibility but still holds the lashes in position.

Lotion Application and Consistency

Lotion placement will vary depending on which kind of system you’re using.

CHC (Elleeplex Profusion)

Apply the lotion 1mm from the base of the lash all the way to the tips.
This system is gentle and works gradually, making it suitable for fine or average lashes. You don’t always need to bring the lotion completely to the tips, doing so can occasionally lead to over-curling, especially if your rod, shield, or hybrid shield is on the smaller side.

TGA (Elleebana One Shot)

Apply the lotion 1mm from the waterline and about three-quarters of the way up the natural lash, avoiding the tips and the hump or apex of the rod/shield.
If you’d like a more dramatic curl, bring the lotion placement slightly higher. For a softer curl, place it slightly lower. This system processes quickly, so precise placement is essential to prevent over-processing or lash damage.

Processing Times and Lash Checks

Each client’s lashes are different — fine, medium, or coarse lashes all process at different rates. Always refer to Elleebana’s recommended timing chart and adjust as needed based on lash density, strength, and condition.

To avoid under- or over-processing, perform control checks during each lotion step.

Flex Check – During Step 1 Lotion

Using tweezers, carefully peel a single lash away from the rod and move it around in a circular motion.

  • If the lash feels super flexible and soft, the lotion is ready to remove - the disulphide bonds have now been broken down.
  • If the lash still offers a little bit of resistance, leave the Step 1 lotion on for a little longer than predicted.

Be gentle during this check, excessive tension on the lash can cause weakness or damage.

Set Check – During Step 2 Lotion

To determine lash readiness, carefully peel a single lash all the way off the rod before letting go.

  • If the lash bounces back into the curled position, it’s ready for lotion removal.
  • If the lash doesn’t move, the lotion will need a bit more time to process.

System Used: One Shot vs. Elleeplex Profusion

Knowing which system you used is crucial for troubleshooting. Each formula behaves differently, so understanding their chemistry and performance will help you pinpoint the cause of an issue more accurately.

The Elleeplex Profusion system is a dual-use formula for both lashes and brows, while the original One Shot formula is designed specifically for lashes.

  • Elleebana One Shot uses Thioglycolic Acid (TGA) and processes very quickly, making it ideal for coarse, thick, or resistant lashes.

  • Elleeplex Profusion contains Cysteamine Hydrochloride (CHC), a more gentle active ingredient that significantly reduces the chance of over-processing but requires longer processing times.

Processing times and removal methods differ between these two systems, so always follow the correct guidelines for the product line you’re working with.

Rinsing and Removal

Proper removal is key to ensuring your results last and your client’s lashes remain healthy.
Any leftover product can continue to process and weaken the lashes post-treatment, so always follow the manufacturer's protocol.

  • Elleeplex Profusion: Perform a dry removal after both steps. Carefully remove all lotion with a dry cotton tip or micro brush — no water at this stage.

  • Elleebana One Shot: Use a dry removal for Step 1 and a wet removal or full lash bath for Step 2. This ensures that all remaining solution is neutralized and lashes are completely clean.

Be thorough, leftover product can compromise your results and lash health. Following Elleebana’s rinse protocol ensures complete neutralization and prepares lashes for tint or aftercare.

PRODUCT

If your technique looks solid but your results are still inconsistent, product quality and handling may be the reason.

Product Storage

Temperature can make or break your lash lift results. Both Elleeplex Profusion and Elleebana One Shot sachets are temperature-sensitive, and maintaining proper storage conditions ensures the integrity and consistency of your results.

Elleeplex Profusion

Elleeplex Profusion sachets should always be stored below 75.2°F (24°C) both day and night. Because of their sensitivity, we recommend keeping them in the refrigerator, but never frozen. The product should remain above 39.2°F (4°C) while in cold storage.

If you refrigerate your lotions, allow them to return to room temperature before use. Using a cold lotion can affect the product’s performance and processing time.

Keep in mind that room temperature also impacts processing.
If your workspace is particularly warm, your lotions will process faster than normal. For example, if your standard processing is 6 minutes lift and 6 minutes set with the Elleeplex system, you may need to reduce each step by 1–2 minutes in hotter environments.

Elleebana One Shot

The One Shot system is also sensitive to temperature fluctuations and should be stored below 75.2°F (24°C) at all times. Like Profusion, these sachets can be kept in the refrigerator, but should never be frozen - maintain them above 39.2°F (4°C).

Unlike Profusion, the One Shot lotions can be used directly from the refrigerator, there’s no need to wait for them to reach room temperature. Environmental temperature still matters, though. In warm or humid conditions, processing happens faster.

If your usual timing is 6 minutes for lifting and 5 minutes for setting, consider shortening each step by 1–2 minutes in a hot room. Think of it like hair color — heat accelerates chemical activity, so timing adjustments keep you in control of the outcome.

Expiration Dates

Expired solutions often lose potency or separate, resulting in weak lifts or uneven processing. Always check expiration dates before each use.

Application Order

Be mindful of your steps. The lifting lotion (Step 1) softens the lash bonds, while the setting lotion (Step 2) reforms and strengthens them. If applied in the wrong order, lashes may stay limp or over-processed.

Environment

Your treatment room can impact processing.

  • Too warm: Solutions may act faster than expected.

  • Too cool: The chemical reaction may slow, producing a weak lift.
Maintain a consistent, moderate temperature and monitor timing accordingly.

Choosing Trusted Professional Products

Inconsistent lift results aren’t always a technique issue—sometimes the products themselves play a role. Fresh solutions, proper storage, and reliable tools can make a noticeable difference in outcome and consistency, Lash and Beauty Store carries professional lash lift essentials that take the guesswork out of choosing quality supplies.

CLIENT CONSIDERATIONS

Sometimes, the reason for an inconsistent lift isn’t technique or product — it’s the client’s biology or lifestyle. Understanding your client’s habits, health changes, and skincare routine can make all the difference in achieving predictable results.

Medications and Health Changes
Has your client started any new medications or treatments that affect hair growth or texture? Certain medications, such as those for thyroid, hormones, or acne, can change how lashes respond to lifting solutions.

Hormonal Fluctuations
Is your client going through hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, postpartum, or menopause? Hormonal shifts can temporarily alter lash strength, curl retention, or growth patterns, leading to results that vary from their usual lift.

Aftercare Routine
Does your client understand and follow aftercare properly? Using oil-based products, heavy eye creams, or sleeping in humid environments too soon after a lift can cause premature curl drop or uneven results. Reviewing aftercare with your client after each appointment ensures long-lasting results.

Skincare and Cleansing Habits
What is your client using on their face and lashes daily? Cleansers or serums with oils, exfoliating acids, or lash serums containing strong actives can interfere with retention and integrity of the curl. Encourage gentle, water-based cleansing.

Sleeping Positions
Does your client sleep on their side or face? Consistent pressure on one eye can cause one side to relax or distort faster than the other, one of the most common reasons for uneven results.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING

No matter how long you’ve been performing lifts, documentation is one of your most valuable troubleshooting tools.

  • Take photos of lashes on the rod/shield and of your lotion placement.

  • Record processing times, product batch numbers, and environmental notes.

Having this visual and written reference makes it much easier to recognize patterns and fine-tune your process over time.

Troubleshooting isn’t about mistakes, it’s about refinement. Every lift that doesn’t turn out as planned provides insight into how product chemistry, technique, and client biology interact. By methodically reviewing your technique and product handling, you’ll strengthen your understanding and achieve more predictable, beautiful results with every service.
