The Difference Between Hard and Soft Wax

If you’re waxing a client, it’s essential to pick the right kind of wax for their treatment. To do that, you need to understand the difference between hard and soft wax. We provide a brief overview of each wax type and the pros and cons here.

Soft Wax

Soft wax, as the name suggests, is a soft, sticky wax that’s applied to the skin in a thin layer using a spatula. Soft wax sticks to both hairs and the skin, and you pull it off using strips.

Soft wax has several benefits. For one, it’s exfoliating. When it’s peeled off the skin, the top layer of dead skin cells is peeled off with it, exposing the silky-smooth skin beneath. Soft wax is also cheaper and easier to apply, making it a great option for beginner waxers.

However, this kind of wax also has its cons. Namely, it’s more painful than hard wax since it removes both the hair and layers of dead skin. Therefore, you shouldn’t apply it to the same area twice.

Hard Wax

Hard wax is a thick wax that only adheres to hairs, not the skin. It works by hardening on the skin and doesn’t require the use of strips to remove. You simply peel it off once the melted wax cools and hardens.

Hard wax is less painful than soft wax because the heat it emanates opens up the pores and makes it easier to pull hairs out. It’s also less sticky than soft wax and leaves behind less residue.

However, hard wax tends to be more expensive than soft wax. It also takes a little more time to heat it up beforehand.

Which To Use?

You now know the difference between hard and soft wax. Now, you’re probably wondering which one to use. It all depends on the area you’re waxing and your client’s sensitivity level.

Hard wax is better suited for small areas of the body with finer hair, such as the face, underarms, and bikini line. Soft wax, on the other hand, is ideal for larger parts of the body, such as the torso and legs.

Of course, waxing can be painful, and you also want to consider your client’s comfort level. For clients with low pain tolerances or extremely sensitive skin, hard wax tends to be the better option.
